F.A.Q.

Is there a registration fee?

At the moment all services are free. In fact, as a Host you can earn a few bucks and as a Guest you can save a few bucks. The only cost for a guest is what the Host charges for a PurpleDinner meal served in their home.

How do guests pay hosts for meals?

We will soon have an online option for guests to pay hosts.  For now, guests should pay hosts in cash when you meet for your meal.

Do hosts need to pay taxes on their income from guests?

Hosts are responsible for reporting profit as regular income.

How much should I charge for a meal?

You are free to set whatever price you’d like, but we recommend pricing a little below restaurants with similar food to what you offer.

Is it safe to dine at stranger´s house or to have a stranger over as a guest?

Every interaction with unknown people met through the Internet brings a certain risk. Meeting in real life with a stranger should be considered a high risk activity. Follow our safety guidelines for preventing unwanted situations (common sense precautions are necessary). You should communicate with your prospective Guest or Host before you meet with them to be sure you feel comfortable with them (you can meet them online through our webchat option). You may choose to follow the added precautions of 1) meeting someone in a public place before traveling together to the Host’s home, and 2) only choosing Guests or Hosts with positive reviews posted on their wall. PurpleDinner will not take any responsibility for negative encounters experienced from meeting people on this site (see Limits of Liability and Indemnity).

In which countries can I look for hosts?

The PurpleDinner website can be used in every country, but take caution in countries with political unrest. We highly recommend looking at your country’s travel advisory list (e.g., for USA: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html, for UK: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice). Become a member and enjoy meeting wonderful people from all over the world, and even people from your own neighborhood.

When are PurpleDinner meal times?

The time and date are up to the Guest and Host, and should generally be agreed upon ahead of time. Everything from an early breakfast until a late dinner is possible. A PurpleDinner can be a cup of coffee or a full meal, so feel free to make it what you want, and be creative.

What is an online PurpleDinner?

An online PurpleDinner is an online meal via webcam with another member of our site. It can also be an opportunity to discuss cooking and meal preparation online, exchange food recipes, or even a cooking tutorial! This is a new concept that can bring people together in fun, unconventional ways.
